The 95th Academy Awards took place last night, March 12, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. A star-studded event celebrating the best and brightest of Hollywood’s blockbusters, the iconic evening hosted by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was emceed by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, and broadcast by ABC. Over 20 categories were presented onstage, showcasing everything from Best Picture to Best Sound to Best Animated Short.
Of course, GLAAD is here to uplift all things LGBTQ at the ceremony, including 7 wins for Everything Everywhere All At Once, and a necessary and impactful shoutout to drag performers from the films director. Here’s what you missed…
Several LGBTQ stars graced our screens as presenters onstage including Cara DeLevigne, Ariana DeBose, Janelle Monae.
Meanwhile, stars like Harvey Guillen wowed us with their bold red carpet look.
Director Daniel Scheinert, in one of two award acceptance speeches of the evening, called out the rampant dragphobia and discriminatory laws currently sweeping the U.S.
In a message of gratitude to his parents, Scheinert exclaimed: “Thank you for not squashing my creativity when I was making really disturbing horror films, or really comedy films, or dressing in drag as a kid, which is a threat to nobody!” The audience, rightuflly so, erupted into a raucous applause.
The Oscars also featured a stripped down, chilling performance from queer icon Lady Gaga, who stunned audiences with a rendition of her Oscar nominated track “Hold My Hand.”
Lastly, there is of course the flurry of wins for Everything Everywhere All At Once, a film that prominently features a queer woman of color as a lead, portrayed by openly queer actress Stephanie Hsu. Hsu also appeared alongside David Byrne in a performance of “This Is a Life,” a song featured in the film and nominated that evneing for Best Original Song.
Everything Everywhere All At Once took home trophies for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
