Why does giving our kids their first phones feel like such a trap? In the latest installment of #Brooding, our newsletter about modern family life, Kathryn Jezer-Morton weighs the pros and cons of child cell phone use. It’s well-established at this point that social media can harm teenagers’ self-esteem, but what about the constant access to an always-on device? Their still-developing brains don’t yet know the dull and constant attentiveness that we all have for our devices. The sense that people are waiting to hear back, that we have important communicative work that needs to be done, or that, when we don’t, we still have to scroll for some reason.
