House Democrats are preparing for a change in leadership in the next year that could support a new and diverse generation of members.

Nancy Pelosi, who has spent almost two decades as the House Democratic leader, is expected to step down at the end of this Congress, according to The Washington Post.

Her career highlights include attempting to end the Iraq War that was started by George W. Bush, twice impeaching former President Donald Trump and helping pass President Joe Biden’s agenda through a marginally controlled House.

The early favorite to take her spot as the next Democratic leader is Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, according to The Washington Post. Jeffries, who is chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which advocates for economic and social justice.

If selected, the Brooklyn, New York, native would be the first Black person to lead either party in either chamber.

“I can’t prognosticate the future or what would happen, but if we are playing ‘what if there is ever a change,’ I think it is very important and would have no problem saying that, if I had a crystal ball, I would want the leadership to be reflective of this wonderful democracy in America we live in,” Rep. Joyce Beatty (Ohio), who chairs the Congressional Black Caucus, said in The Washington Post. “Certainly I would like to be able to say that I was part of the process that had the first Black American to be speaker of the U.S. Congress.”
