Parenting – perhaps the oldest profession that still, despite all the long grueling days and zero compensation, goes overlooked – is not, nor has it ever been easy. This pandemic has further exasperated the reality that parents (and everyone else!) are experiencing. Doing something like, I don’t know, fleeing to a feminist commune, or to Scandinavia, seems like a welcome escape, thought it isn’t very practical. So, “while the dishes festered and the dog stood longingly by the door,” writer Kim Brooks shares, “I Googled ‘Are there still feminist communes? Can I move there?’” What she found were whole communities where people had lost touch with the fact that on the outside — or “the mainstream,” as they call it — parents often have no one and nothing to rely on but themselves.
