GLAAD INTERVIEW: FLETCHER on new music, the impact of Katy Perry's “I Kissed A Girl” and raising $50k for GLAAD for Pride Month

As we near the end of Pride month, queer recording artist FLETCHER is opening up about her highly-anticipated new single and upcoming album, recent tour supporting lesbian bars and how Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl’ impacted her queer journey in a new interview with GLAAD’s Anthony Allen Ramos.

Most recently, FLETCHER just wrapped up her “Meet Her At The Bar: Pride Month Experience tour,” where the singer-songwritter took the stage at 4 of the few remaining women-owned lesbian bars across the country. In addition to directly supporting these bars, FLETCHER has also been raising funds for GLAAD’s Rapid Response Initiative and Communities of Color Program-  she has raised over $50,000 in donations via her social channels and through partnerships with Lyft, JD Sports and Capitol Records during the tour.

At the tour’s final stop at New York City’s famous Henrietta Hudson, FLETCHER presented GLAAD’s Deputy President & COO, Darra Gordon with the $50,000 check, an experience she called a “life highlight.”

When talking about what inspired this tour, she says that “I was really inspired by something called ‘The Lesbian Bar Project’ and also by GLAAD, who’s always been doing so much incredible work for the queer community. I wanted to find a way to continue lifting up other spaces that were also facilitating safe spaces for people to go meet people who are like them and have fun and celebrate themselves and who they are.” “The Lesbian Bar Project” is an initiative with a goal of preserving safe spaces for queer communities throughout the U.S..

The most important part of this tour for FLETCHER had been “Just being back in those spaces again and seeing so many beautiful queer people experiencing joy and having the freedom to be themselves.”

FLETCHER’s new single “Her Body Is Bible” is out now and when talking about upcoming album “Girl of my Dreams”, out on September 16 on Capitol Records, she says that “I’ve never put out an album before, this is my first album. It’s really representative of a celebration of self. My last projects have been very much about other relationships and other people… it’s a deep dive into the relationship with myself.”

When asked about what it would’ve meant to her to have had someone in the media, creating openly queer music like her, as a kid, she says that “I needed that growing up, so I just want to be that artist and make that content and say those words for the little version of me.”

She talks about her first exposure to the concept of women loving women. “My mom was driving me to middle school and “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry came on, it was the first song I heard about a girl kissing a girl… that was the moment I was like “ok maybe I like girls.” I remember the significance of what that song, at that time, did. The lightbulb it lit off in my head.”

Like so many others, this song truly was an awakening for her. After hearing it, “I remember looking for all these resources and taking quizzes to figure out ‘am I gay?’ Babe, if you’re taking an online quiz called ‘Am I Gay?’ you’re maybe a little queer!” In a very full circle turn of events, FLETCHER actually sampled “I Kissed a Girl” in her hit single “Girls, Girls, Girls!”

On a final note, FLETCHER says “That’s why representation is so important and the work that GLAAD does is so important. So, we can keep letting people know that it’s safe to be themselves.”

Next up FLETCHER will hit the road this fall for the Girl Of My Dreams Tour, a 24-date headlining run of North America. Kicking off on October 11 at House of Blues Orlando, the tour will continue through November 17 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. With stops at legendary venues like the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, the Girl Of My Dreams Tour will follow her spring tour of North America – which sold out in minutes – as well as buzzworthy appearances at Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.
