Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1.) Tár opens in theaters today, October 7, from Focus Features. Cate Blanchett (Carol) plays Lydia Tár, a world-famous composer and conductor who is renowned as the first woman chief conductor of a major German orchestra, and the film follows the psychological drama she faces alongside her wife (a member of the symphony) and their daughter. 2.) Monster High: The Movie, featuring out actor Ceci Balgot as non-binary character Frankie Stein, has been released! The live-action musical fantasy follows Clawdeen Wolf (Miia Harris), a half-werewolf and half-human teen, who must navigate her identity at a new “monsters only” school with the help of classmates and best friends Frankie Stein and Draculaura. Watch Clawdeen embrace her true monster at heart on Nickelodeon and Paramount Plus! In other film release news, Hulu’s Hellraiser reboot is available today! In this reimagining of out artist Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic, a young woman struggling with addiction discovers an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural being, including trans actress and model Jamie Clayton as the notorious Pinhead.
3.) The Scooby Doo Halloween special Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is available now, settling a decades long debate: Velma Dinkley is a lesbian! Viral clips from the film confirm that Velma is “crushing big time” over criminal costume designer Coco Diablo, marking the first same-sex love interest of the Scooby gang. In the animated mystery, the Mystery Inc. pals must crack a case involving ghosts and ghouls that look exactly like them. In more Scooby-Doo news, HBO has released the first teaser trailer of Velma, featuring out stars Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Cherry Jones, and Fortune Feimster among the voice cast! The adult animated comedy series tells the origin story of our beloved Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the gang!
4.) The official trailer has been released for out Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black’s new docuementary Mama’s Boy. Adapted from his 2019 memoir Mama’s Boy: A Story From Our Americas, the film follows Black as he returns to the South to reconnect with his conservative Mormon mother, featuring interviews from his extended family, husband, out Olympic gold medalist Tom Daley, and more! In more docuemntary news, husbands and producing partners Colman and Raúl Domingo have signed on as executive producers of When My Sleeping Dragon Woke. The doc chronicles the life of actress Sharon Washington as she writes her award-winning first play Feeding the Dragon, centering on her childhood growing up in St. Anges Library in New York City! Another iconic husband duo, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita, is set to produce the newly aquired documentary Broadway Rising by Vertical Entertainment. The pic charts Broadway’s journey back to the stage after the 2020 Covid pandemic while examining the entire financial ecosystem that supports New York theater. In other production news, out legendary filmmaker John Waters has set his return to cinema after almost twenty years for an adaptation of his 2022 novel Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance! Written and directed by Waters, the film follows three generations of women— mother Adora, daughter Marsha, and granddaughter Poppy— who all conspire to kill each other.
5.) Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has received a ‘sneak preview’ week-long theatrical run from November 23 to 29 before its Netflix premiere on December 23! The film features out actress and singer Janelle Monáe as tech entrepreneur Cassandra “Andi” Brand and follows Detective Benoit (Daniel Craig) as he travels to Greece to delve into a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects! In other Netflix news, out Good Trouble star Sherry Cola has been set to appear in the streamers untitled rom-com as a no-nonsense playwright and director. Additionally, out actress Shailene Woodley has been set to join the cast of Craig Gillespie’s upcoming pic Dumb Money. The film centers on the January 2021 “short squeeze” movement around GameStop, where Reddit users banded together to increase the stock values of the retail chain, changing Wall Street forever.

6.) Season two of The Problem with Jon Stewart premieres on Apple TV+ today, October 7, with an insightful and pointed episode interrogating political opportunists and right-wing extremists who are attempting to ban lifesaving healthcare for transgender youth. In the episode, Stewart shares the truth about supporting trans youth and the importance of gender affirming care. 7.) The official trailer has been released for the sophomore season of HBO’s award-winning dark comedy series The White Lotus, created by out producer Mike White. This season of the social satire features out actress and comedian Aubrey Plaza as Harper Spiller, who is on vacation with her husband and his friends at an entirely new White Lotus resort in Sicily! 8.) BBC has presented a first-look teaser of Wreck, giving us a peek at the horror comedy set to the backdrop of trans icon Kim Petras’ haunted-hit “There Will Be Blood.” The series follows Jamie Walsh, a young gay man who boards a cruise ship in a desperate race to find his missing sister. With a blood-thirsty murderer in a duck costume on the loose, Jamie must infiltrate the overworked and underpaid crew, including trans crewmate Rosie (out actress Miya Ocego), in hopes of uncovering the sinister truth. Wreck sets sail on BBC and iPlayer October 9; watch the teaser below!
9.) A teaser trailer and first-look posters of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology series American Horror Story have been released, revealing the long-awaited return of out star Zachary Quinto as Sam. Other notable out performers set to star in the New York City-themed season include Charlie Carver as Adam, Russell Tovey as Patrick, and Joe Mantello, Sandra Bernhard, Isaac Cole Powell, and Denis O’Hare in undisclosed roles. 10.) Shudder has unveiled the legendary cast of the spin-off series The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula: Titans. The drag icons set to return from previous Boulet Brothers seasons include Abhora, Astrud Aurelia, Erika Klash, Evah Destruction, HoSo Terra Toma, Kendra Onixxx, Koco Caine, Melissa Befierce, Victoria Elizabeth Black and Yovska! Watch the stars compete for a one-thousand-dollar grand prize, the headlining spot on the upcoming world tour, and the first ever “Dragula Titans” crown and title on October 25; check out Shudder’s “Meet our Monsters” video below! In other casting news, queer actress and political advocate Rowan Blanchard has joined the cast of Peacock’s forthcoming mystery drama Poker Face. Though plot details of the 10-episode anthology-like series are still being kept under wraps, Blanchard joins previously announced out stars Clea DuVall and Jameela Jamil in the seemingly queer-led ensemble! Additionally, queer writer, comedian, and actress Abby McEnany has been set to star in the CBS drama pilot The Never Game. The series follows Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley), who travels across America helping families recover their lost loved ones as a “rewardist”, with the help of his right-hand-man Teddi Bruin (Robin Weigert). McEnany portrays Velma, Teddi’s wife and business partner.
11.) Queer The Voice Australia finalist Johnny Manuel has released a music video for his new single “The Others”, along with his latest EP Younger Skin; watch the music video below! New York’s out icon of the underground CHRISTEENE has released the single “LO PAID RUNWAY MODEL” off the forthcoming album MIDNITE FUKK TRAIN, out November 11; find the music video here. 12.) The Imagen Awards have unveiled the winners of their 37th annual gala honoring Latines in television and film, including a plethora of inclusive programs and out stars: Love, Victor (Best Comedy Primetime Program), We’re Here (Best Variety or Reality Show), Ariana DeBose (Best Actress – Feature Film, West Side Story), and Harvey Guillén (Best Supporting Actor – Comedy, What We Do in the Shadows)— check out photos from the event here! In other LGBTQ media news, Rachel Maddow, the first out lesbian anchor to host a major prime-time news program in the US, has announced a new podcast series with MSNBC. Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra explores American extremism, focusing on the plot to overthrow the government and democracy as a whole during WWII. The podcast is set to debut its first two out of eight episodes on October 10!
