Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1.) The Ghostface killer sets his sights on a new city in Paramount Pictures’ newly released teaser trailer for the sixth installment of the Scream Franchise! In the film, the four survivors of the latest killings— including Mindy Meeks-Martin portrayed by queer actress Jasmin Savoy Brown— leave Woodsboro behind to start a new chapter in New York City. But in a city of millions, no one hears you scream. Catch Scream VI in theaters March 10, 2023 and check out the trailer below.
2.) Horror romance My Animal, starring out non-binary actors Amandla Stenberg and Bobbi Salvör Menuez, has been picked up by Paramount Worldwide Acquisition Group. The feature directorial debut from Jacqueline Castel is set in a small town and follows outcast hockey goalie Heather (Heather), who falls for the new-to-town figure skater (Stenberg). While their relationship grows deeper, Heather must contend with her deepest darkest secret and control the animal within. Additionally, Legendary Entertainment and AfterShock Media have acquired the rights for a feature adaptation of graphic novel Party & Prey from out GLAAD Media Award-nominated co-creator Steve Orlando and out co-creator Steve Foxe. The taboo-breaking queer thriller tells the story of Alan and Scott, a wealthy older man and an attractive younger man who meet at a nightclub and go home together. Back at Alan’s house, the pair’s dirty secrets are revealed and they have a night together that neither of them could have predicted. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on these queer horror projects!
3.) Netflix’s favorite mother-daughter duo returns with a season two trailer of Ginny & Georgia, premiering on the streamer January 5! The season brings new relationships and challenges to Wellsbury as secrets from the past come to the surface. Queer characters Maxine (Sara Waisglass), Nick (Dan Beirne), and Gabriel (Alex Mallari Jr.) are all set to return for the sophomore season; watch the trailer below!
4.) Hulu’s original comedy series How I Met Your Father has been set to return for its second season January 24, with new episodes dropping weekly! Picking up eight years after the events of the How I Met Your Mother finale, the series focuses on a new group of friends, including queer character Ellen (lesbian actress, comedian, and writer Tien Tran) and appearances from the original series stars. Find sneak-peek images of season two below! In other Hulu news, the streamer has added out actress and director Moran Rosenblatt to its limited series We Were the Lucky Ones. Based on Georgia Hunter’s best-selling novel of the same name, the series chronicles the true story of a Jewish family separated at the beginning of World War II. Hulu has also ordered Standing By, a satirical look into the lives of guardian angels, from out creators Dan Levy and Ally Pankiw! In addition to Levy, the voice cast of the upcoming animated series includes queer and non-binary Hacks star Poppy Lui and out Orange Is the New Black star Samira Wiley. 5.) The party is just getting started at Essex College! Following the success of season two, HBO Max has renewed Mindy Kaling’s hit comedy-drama The Sex Lives of College Girls for a third season. The series follows four college suitmates and unlikely best friends, including lesbian legacy student Leighton Murray (queer actress Reneé Rapp), as they conquer the trials and tribulations of college life. In more HBO Max news, the GLAAD Media Award-nominated series Sort Of has been renewed for a third season by the streamer! The series follows non-binary millenial Sabi Mehboob (out creator Bilal Baig), who bartenders at an LGBTQ bookstore cafe and a acts as parental figure for a hipster family, while managing the expectations of their traditional Pakistani immigrant family. Queer coming-of-age series Young Royals has also been renewed for a third and final season! Set at the prestigious boarding school Hillerska, the Swedish Netflix show explores the ever-changing relationship between heir to the throne Prince Wilhelm and his fellow pupil Simon Eriksson. 6.) Emmy Award-winning competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race has ruvealed the new Queens of Season fifteen, premiering with back-to-back episodes January 6 on MTV! This season sets off the race to find “America’s Next Drag Superstar” with a $200,000 cash prize— the highest reward in Drag Race herstory. 7.) Showtime’s award-winning series Yellowjackets has been renewed for a third season more than three months ahead of its March 26 season two premiere. The incredibly queer part-survival epic, part-psychological horror, and part-coming-of-age drama details the saga of an unlucky team of high school girls soccer players who survive of a plane crash. Additionally, the Starz drama Power Book II: Ghost has been set to return March 17 on the Starz app. The series picks up after the murder of Zeke and features out characters Dru Tejada (Lovell Adams-Gray) and Everett (gay actor Bradely Gibson).
8.) Queer Academy Award-winning actress Ariana DeBose has been set as a celebrity guest in the newly-renewed second season of Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, joining out actress Cynthia Erivo amongst the voice cast. The reboot of Jim Henon’s beloved classic follows the adventures of the Fraggles— Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober, and Red— as they interact with the Doozers and avoid the Gorgs. Watch the first season of the musical puppet series and the Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Night of the Lights holiday special on Apple TV+ today! In other Apple TV+ news, the streamer has ordered Mere Mortals, an eight episode companion series from queer Mythic Quest star Ashly Burch. With entirely new characters, the series explores the lives of employees, players, and fans who are impacted by the game at the center of Mythic Quest!
9.) Conversations with Friends producer Element Pictures has acquired the rights to queer coming-of-age love story Bellies, based on the highly anticipated debut novel from Nicola Dinan. The eight part series chronicles the hilarious and heartbreaking love story between students Tom and Ming, which changes dramatically when Ming comes out as trans and decides to transition. In more upcoming TV news, Disney+ has greenlit a pilot for Witch Mountain, a modern reimagining of the Disney film franchise featuring non-binary actor Biance b Norwood. The series takes place in the shadow of Witch Mountain, following two teens who develop strange abilities and discover that their idyllic town is not what it seems. Norwood portrays Corey, a mature teen on the brink of expulsion who works at the local diner with their best friend Ben. Additionally, CBS has ordered a new drama series entitled The Never Game, featuring lesbian writer, comedian, and actress Abby McEnany. Based on the best-selling novel by Jeffery Deaver, the series follows Colter Shaw, a lone-wolf survivalist who roams the country solving mysteries and contending with his familial struggles. Gay writer, comedian, and actor Julio Torres has also announced a new HBO Original comedy mere days after the suprise cancellation of his beloved Los Espookys series! The series, entitled Little Films, follows Julio’s search for a missing little golden oyster and the people and musing he encounters along the way in New York City. Watch out for these exciting series releases!

11.) The First Annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards winners were announced by out host Jojo Siwa and Jack McBrayer last weekend! Netflix’s queer coming-of-age series Heartstopper scored five wins, including “Outstanding Young Teen Series”, “Outstanding Lead Performance” from bisexual star Kit Connor, “Outstanding Guest Performance” from Olivia Colman, “Outstanding Writing” from out author Alice Oseman and “Outstanding Casting” from Daniel Edwards. Additional queer-inclusive winners include GLAAD Media Award-nominated series The Baby-Sitters Club, City of Ghosts, Centaurworld, and more; check out the full winners list and watch the ceremony for numerous LGBTQ shout-outs. In more Award Show winners news, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards have announced their 2022 winners, naming queer-inclusive films Everything Everywhere All At Once and Tár in a tie for “Best Picture!” All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, a documentary detailing bisexual photographer and activist Nan Goldin’s work to hold Purdue Pharma accountable for the opioid epidemic, also won “Best Documentary.” The Sundance Institute is also granting its International Icon Award to out Oscar nominated Call Me By Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino at their Opening Night: A Taste of Sundance on January 19; the award recognizes those who create distinctive cinematic universes and have made lasting impact on filmmaking through a commitment to storytelling.

12.) The 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards unveiled its 2023 nominations on Monday! LGBTQ-inclusive programs scored a plethora of nods, including Everything Everywhere All At Once with six nominations, Tár with three nominations, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery with two nominations, Abbott Elementary with five nominations, Only Murders in the Building with four nominations, The White Lotus with four nominations, Hacks with three nominations, Better Call Saul with two nominations and House of the Dragon with two nominations. Queer talent was also recognized, as Jeremy Pope received a “Best Actor In a Motion Picture – Drama” nom for his performance in The Inspection, Aubrey Plaza scored a “Best Supporting Actress – Television Limited Series/Motion Picture” nom for her role in The White Lotus, Hannah Einbender got a “Best Supporting Actress – Television Series” nom for her acting in Hacks, Emma d’Arcy received a “Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama” nom for their performance in House of Dragon, and Lady Gaga scored a “Best Original Song” nom for her single “Hold My Hand” in Top Gun Maverick. Five-time Golden Globe winner Ryan Murphy will also be receiving the “Carol Burnett Award” at the ceremony on Tuesday, January 10, airing on NBC at 5-8pm PST and streaming on Peacock; find the full list of nominees here!

13.) In more Award Show nominee news, the nominations for the Critic’s Choice Awards for Film were announced this week, with a number of queer-inclusive projects and performers receiving looks. Everything Everywhere All at Once led the pack with fourteen nominations, including “Best Picture,” “Best Acting Ensemble,” “Best Hair and Makeup,” “Best Visual Effects,” and “Best Comedy.” Tár also got a nod for “Best Picture”, as did Glass Onion, who additionally took home noms for “Best Acting Ensemble” and “Best Comedy.” Queer romcom Bros, received a nomination for “Best Comedy,” and queer-inclusive Wendell & Wild was nominated for “Best Animated Feature.” Queer and non-binary performer Janelle Monae was nominated for “Best Supporting Actress” for their role in Glass Onion. Out writer Charlotte Wells received a nomination for “Best Original Screenplay” for Aftersun, and out writer Samuel D. Hunter got a look for “Best Adapted Screenplay for The Whale. Finally, queer singer Lady Gaga’s song “Hold my Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for “Best Song.” Additionally, the Film Independent Spirit Awards have released their 2023 nominees for Television this week, following their move to gender-neutral acting races. Announced by non-binary Billions star Asia Kate Dillon on Film Independent’s YouTube channel, LGBTQ nominees include This is Going to Hurt (out actor Ben Whishaw), Somebody Somewhere (out actor Jeff Hiller), A League of Their Own (Gbemisola Ikumelo), Abbott Elementary (Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James), Yellowjackets (Melanie Lynskey), and Station Eleven (Danielle Deadwyler); check out the compete list of TV nominees and watch the 38th annual awards ceremony March 4!
