The GLAAD Wrap: Trailers for 'High School' and 'Monarch,' HCA and Dorian TV Awards winners announced, new music video from Riotron and Big Freedia, and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1.) The new teen rom-com Stupid for You is available now on Amazon Prime! The coming-of-age musical follows the story of love sick teen Kat, who reunites their mother’s dysfunctional band to play at their Spring Fling in an effort to win over Eden, the coolest girl in school. Check out the trailer below and watch Stupid for You today.

2.) Out Oscar-winning actress Ariana DeBose has been set to star in the forthcoming psychological thriller House of Spoils. In the Prime Video and Blumhouse Television film, DeBose plays an ambitious chef who opens her first restaurant and has to ward off the powerful spirit of the estate’s previous owner. 

3.) The first trailer has been unveiled for Vivian Kerr’s indie drama Scrap, starring out actor Anthony Rapp, ahead of its world premiere at France’s Deauville American Film Festival in September. The film explores homelessness from a middle class perspective, as a young woman (Kerr) gets laid off and is desperate to land a new job before her estranged older brother (Rapp) finds out. 4.) Out Grammy-nominated indie pop duo Tegan and Sara have shared a sneak peek of their coming-of-age series High School, premiering October 4 on Amazon Freevee. Based on their best-selling memoir of the same name, the series is set in the backdrop of the 1990’s, where the Quin twins— portrayed by TikTok personalities Railey and Seazynn Gilliand— grow into their authentic selves and express their inner worlds through music. 5.) Fox has released a trailer for its new country music drama Monarch, featuring out singer-songwriter Beth Ditto as queer character Gigi. The series follows the reigning King and Queen of Country Music Albie Roman and Dottie Roman, who have created a empire as country music royalty. When their status is put in jeopardy, daughter Nicollete stops at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, alongside her sister Gigi and brother Luke. 6.) HBO Max has released the final trailer for House of Dragon ahead of its premiere this Sunday. Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood”, the series tells the story of House Targaryen. Non-binary actor Emma D’Arcy plays the titular Princess Rhaenyra Taragaryen, King Viserys’s firstborn child who expects to become the Seven Kingdoms’ first queen regnant.

7.) Tatiana Maslany has been set to star and executive producer the forthcoming AMC series Invitation to a Bonfire. Based on the novel by Adrienne Celt, the psychological thriller is set in the 1930’s at an all-girls boarding school, where a young Russian immigrant and groundskeeper is drawn into a lethal love triangle with a faculty member and his wife (Malsany). Invitation to a Bonfire is slated to debut in 2023. In more TV news, VH1 has renewed the Emmy-winning competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race and aftershow RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked for a fifteenth season and Showtime has picked up a sixth season of Lena Waithe’s The Chi, featuring numerous queer characters in the ensemble set in the South Side of Chicago. 

8.) Out Canadian electro-pop artist Riotron has released the official music video for “Drop a Bomb,” teaming up for the first time with queen of music Big Freedia. 9.) Out gay Tony winner Jesse Tyler Ferguson has been set to reprise his role in Take Me Out, which returns to Broadway in the fall. The critically acclaimed revival follows Darren Lemming (Jesse Williams), the star center fielder of the Empires, who faces immense prejudice as a gay person of color within the confines of a classic American institution. Take Me Out re-takes the field on October 27 at the Schoenfeld Theatre!  

10.) The Hollywood Critics Association has revealed the winners of its 2nd Annual HCA TV Awards. Top winners include GLAAD Media Award-winning series Hacks and GLAAD Media Award-nominated miniseries Dopesick. Additional inclusive TV programs and actors consist of The White Lotus, Better Call Saul, Abbott Elementary, What We Do in the Shadows, RuPaul’s Drag Race, A Black Lady Sketch Show, This is Us, Hannah Einbinder (Hacks), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus), and Sarah Paulson (Impeachment: American Crime Story). Stream days one and two of the HCA TV Awards with the link below! In other award news, The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has announced the winners of its 14th Dorian TV Awards. This year’s winners include Yellowjackets, Abbott Elementary, Heartstopper, The White Lotus, The Andy Warhol Diaries, ZIWE, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Euphoria, Girls5Eva! The Imagen Awards have unveiled the full list of nominees for its 37th Annual Gala honoring Latine storytelling, performances, writing and creative expression in television and film. LGBTQ nominees include In The Heights, West Side Story, Euphoria, Chicago Fire, Gentefied, Love, Victor, Saved by the Bell, With Love, The Owl House, We’re Here, Frankie Rodriguez (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), Stephanie Beatriz (Encanto), Ariana DeBose (West Side Story and Schmigadoon!), and more. Additionally, the National Hispanic Media Coalition is honoring out actor, writer, and director Colman Domingo at its 36th Annual Impact Awards gala on September 9!
