The 22nd Latin GRAMMY Awards will air on Univision November 18, beginning at 8 p.m. This year, the nominees list is filled with names from the LGBTQ+ Latine community. Pablo Alborán, Rita Indiana, Ricky Martin, Max Masri, and LGBTQ+ ally Gloria Trevi, are some of the artists bringing visibility to the LGBTQ+ community at the awards.

Spanish musician and singer-songwriter Pablo Alborán, is nominated for all three top categories – Record of the Year (for “Si Hubieras Querido”), Album of the Year (for Vértigo), and Song of the Year (for “Si Hubieras Querido”) as well as Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album (for “Vértigo”).

This year, Dominican writer and singer-songwriter Rita Indiana is nominated for Best New Artist, despite a multi-year career and much critical praise. In 2011, Indiana was selected by the Spanish newspaper El País as one of the 100 most influential Latine personalities. In the Dominican Republic, Indiana who is also an acclaimed writer, is known as “the Monster” or “La Montra,” in the local Spanish dialect. What was most attractive about music, Indiana tells Variety, was that “it gave her a chance to move beyond the sometimes limited, academic circles of literature and reach as many people as possible.” 

Ricky Martin and Carlos Vives are nominated for Song of the Year (for “Canción Bonita”) and Best Pop Song (for “Canción Bonita”) 

Tanghetto, the electrotango band from Argentina, created and led by musician and openly gay producer Max Masri, is nominated for Best Tango Album (for “Tanghetto Plays Piazzolla”)

Queer icon, Mexican singer, songwriter, actress, and music video director, Gloria Trevi, and Chilean singer, songwriter, and musician, Mon Laferte, are nominated for Best Pop Song (for “La Mujer”).

Mabiland, Villano Antillano, Niña Dioz, Georgel, and Jonah Xiao are also some LGBTQ+ Latine artists on the rise you should know about, along with Gina Chávez, nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2020.
