Controversial Republican politician Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called Kwanzaa a “fake religion created by a psychopath” on Sunday, according to Yahoo! News.

Greene made the comments in response to a tweet by the College Republican National Committee wishing the millions of people who celebrate a happy Kwanzaa.

“Wishing you a happy and prosperous Kwanza,” the group tweeted.

Greene responded, “Stop. It’s a fake religion created by a psychopath,” Greene wrote. “You aren’t bringing in new voters, you are turning them away. People are tired of pandering and BS.”

Founded by professor Maulana Karenga in 1966, Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration where African American families give gifts, eat and light candles to honor their ancestors, Yahoo! News reported.

In 1970, Karenga and three members of the Black nationalist group, US Organization, were found guilty of imprisoning and assaulting two female members of the group, including whipping them with cords and batons, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Greene, who represents Georgia’s 14th district, has been a lightning rod of controversy ever since coming onto the national scene.

Last year, she shared an antisemitic and Islamophobic video on her Facebook page, according to The Jerusalem Post.

A supporter of former President Donald Trump, Greene is a big proponent of Trump’s “big lie” that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. That false claim led to the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

“Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, but a cultural one with an inherent spiritual quality,” Karenga said, according to History.
